Casa Caballito, Mérida

Arrived last night at Casa Caballito here in Mérida.  Great place!  An old town house, renovated a la Architectural Digest.  Low key and very comfortable.  My first impression of Mérida is the same.

Jumped into life in Spanish today.  Coffee and grapefruit then out into world.  Introduced ourselves to the corner store owner.  Walked to local park and larger grocery store.  Walked through market.  Stopped for lunch at a restaurant down the street -- Maiz, Canella y Cilantro -- don't know exactly how corn, cinnamon and cilantro would taste together but the name was appealing.  Had a great lunch:  lentil soup, broiled fish filet with orange sauce, rice, salad, tortillas, and a wonderful beverage I'd never had before, called Jamaica (pro: hah - my - ca), a chilled tea made from Hibiscus flowers.  All told, $9.00 for two including decent tip.  Glad to find that prices in Mérida offer great value, but even gladder to discover that tea!  We'll be back I'm sure.

Map of old downtown Mérida (El Centro).  We are staying right under the compass rose.  For scale, it is maybe a 10 minute walk from our house to the closest park down to the south-west.

Tried the plunge pool a few minutes ago.  It isn't heated, and though today is lovely shirt sleeve weather Mérida had a cold snap last week, so it was very... refreshing.  It is in an enclosed courtyard but open to sky, so I tried not to shout and alarm neighbors when I hit the water.
